1. How to make a model.

I absolutely hated making my first models. I used the simplest tutorials I could find. They started out like low-poly bob and got worse and worse until they finally started to get better. How? Practice and understanding. You see, unlike people tell you, practicing will not give you everything. Practicing piano without a teacher is just a bad idea. Also, practicing with a teacher but acting like a brick wall will not make you Mozart in a million years. Likewise, reading this tutorial will not make you brilliant. You must understand. I am only here to open your mind to the possibilities of 3d modelling.

Your first few models should only focus on the basics of the program you own. In this example, I assume that you have MilkShape3D, which I prefer to GMAX by far. First things first, you should learn the five basic skills: create object, select, move, extrude, and scale. These alone can make you something like low-poly bob. Alone, they cannot make something like the latest Javantea model. But try this one first. It should take 2 minutes max.

1.) Create a box. Simply click the box button on the left under the controls tab. Then click and drag in any of the three flat design windows to create a box.

2.) Scale the box. Next to the box button is the scale button. Click it and scale it to the width of a chest. Scale it to the height of an arm. Scale it to the depth of the chest.

3.) Select the two faces on the left. The select button is right next to the scale button. At the bottom there are selection options like vertex, face, group, and joint. Click face. Under that there are other options "by vertex" and "ignore backfaces". Click ignore backfackes and unclick by vertex. Look for the left or right window. If you have the right, switch it to left. Click the box. It should select one of the triangles. Click and shift click until you have selected only the two triangles on the left.

4.) Extrude the two faces into an arm. Click the extrude button. Find the front window. You should see the chest there with a line selected on the left. Drag it to the left. It will extrude out into an arm.

5.) Repeat 3 and 4 for the right, bottom, and the top. Now you have chest, arms, and a neck.

6.) Select arm vertices. Click the select button. At the bottom, click vertex. Under that unclick ignore backfaces. Select the arm vertices on both sides by dragging your cursor over them.

7.) Scale the vertices into muscles. Click the scale button. Then you can scale the vertices. Scale them into larger muscles in the front and left viewports.

Now that you know how to do these things, you are ready to make blobs like bob. But MilkShape3D is extremely powerful in the hands of a skilled user. In fact, the latest Javantea model is made of boxes only. Of course, the intermediate tutorial will show you how to do those things. The next tutorial is about skinning. Now that you have this model, you'll want to skin it.
